Ryan O’Neal was an all-around actor at his age and acted in many movies and TV shows varying in their themes like historical epics, melodramas, etc. Besides, he was a former boxer, had four children, and was involved with the now-departed Farrah Fawcett. We shall discuss his life and career from rags to bones.

Charle S.E Parker Ryan O’Neal III, born on the 20th of April is a Hollywood actor brought into this world on April 20, 1941, in Los Angeles country. He was the eldest son of actress Patricia Ruth Olga (née O’Callaghan) and novelist and screenwriter Charles O’Neal. His father was of Irish and English descent, while his mother was of paternal Irish and maternal Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. His brother, Kevin, was also an actor and screenwriter.

O’Neal attended University High School in Los Angeles, where he trained to become a Golden Gloves boxer. He competed in two Golden Gloves championships in Los Angeles in 1956 and 19572. During the late 1950s, his father had a job writing on a television series called Citizen Soldier and moved the family to Munich, where O’Neal attended Munich American High School1. In Germany, O’Neal was struggling at school, so his mother pulled some favors and got him a job as a stand-in on a show being shot in the area, Tales of the Vikings. O’Neal worked on it as an extra and stuntman and became interested in acting.

O’Neal returned to the U.S. and tried to make it as an actor. He made his first TV appearance guest starring on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis episode “The Hunger Strike” in 1960. He followed this with guest slots on The Untouchables, General Electric Theater, The DuPont Show with June Allyson, Laramie, Two Faces West, Westinghouse Playhouse (several episodes), Bachelor Father, My Three Sons, Leave It to Beaver episode “Wally Goes Steady” in 1961 and The Virginian1. He was under contract to Universal but they let it lapse1.

In 1963, he married actress Joanna Moore for the first time. They had two children together: Tatum (born 1964) and Griffin (born 1965). However, their marriage ended in divorce after Moore left him for another man. In 1964-65 he married actress Leigh Taylor-Young for the second time. They had one child together: Patrick (born 1967). He was in a long-time love relationship with one of the most popular actresses Farrah Fawcett and remained good friends even after she died from the cancer in 2009. However, they never became married although they lived together for more than thirty years. They also adopted two children: Redmond (born 1980) from Fawcett’s previous marriage to Tommy Lee Jones, who died shortly after birth; and John (born 1995) from Fawcett’s relationship with Ryan’s son Griffin.

O’Neal’s career took off when he landed the role of Rodney Harrington on the ABC nighttime soap opera Peyton Place in 1964. It was an instant hit and boosted O’Neal’s career. He later found success in films that showcased his versatility as an actor.

Some of his most notable films include:

  • Love Story (1970): A romantic drama based on Erich Segal’s novel , starring Ali MacGraw as Jenny March, who falls in love with Oliver Barrett IV (O’Neal), but faces opposition from her wealthy family due to their different social backgrounds . The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards , including Best Picture , Best Director , Best Actor , Best Actress , Best Adapted Screenplay , Best Original Song (“You’re Love”) ,and Best Cinematography . It also won two Golden Globe Awards , including Best Motion Picture - Drama.
  • Paper Moon (1973): A crime comedy-drama based on John Steinbeck 's novel , starring Paul Newman as Harry “Doc” Holliday , who teams up with a con artist named Tom McCloud (O’Neal) to swindle people out west during the Great Depression . The film earned Newman an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
  • Barry Lyndon (1975): A historical epic directed by Stanley Kubrick , based on William Makepeace Thackeray 's novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon . It stars O’Neal as Barry Lyndon , an Irish adventurer.

The turbulent relationship between Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett, which was a three-decade affair. In 1979 they worked together on set for “The Six Million Dollar Man,” and Fawcett was her lover. They eventually decided they had fallen in love and adopted each other’s child from a previous marriage. Some of the highlights of their relationship include:

  • They decided to adopt Redmond O’Neal in 1985, who is a child with Down syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. He was their only child biologically.
  • In 1992, they acted for each other in a real story of domestic abuse known as the burning bed. Fawcett portrayed a woman that was battered by her own husband,(O’Neal) and O’Neal took the role of a detective assigned to assist the woman.
  • The couple split in 1997 after almost two decades of marriage. They stated that they wished to be friends and co-parents for Redmond’s sake.
  • They came together again in 2001 when Fawcett looked after O’Neal who had been diagnosed with leukaemia while in remission. They confessed that they still have affection for each other and wished their union to continue.
  • In 2009, she succumbed to anal cancer aged 62. O’Neal stated he was deeply saddened to lose her and she was his other half.

He was also involved in a prolonged feud with his father which ended up in him getting hit off by Ryan back in 2007. He abandoned Los Angeles and moved to a nearby small town on the border of Mexico.

  • Patrick O’Neal: Jones started acting as a teenager when he appeared for the first time in The Last Picture Show (1971). He acted in other films, including The Driver (1978), A Time for Love, (1990), and The Big Lebowski (1998). His current wife is the third one he has gotten since tying the knot with another actress named Jennifer Aniston between 2000-2005.
